Northern Sardinia –
this is how vacation works

NORTH OR SOUTH – THAT’S THE QUESTION

This is what happens to many: Once you have chosen Sardinia as your holiday destination, the next step is whether you should travel north or south . Where is it nicer? The answer to this is very clear: one should visit Sardinia more than once! The typical charm of Dolce Vita, romantic places, breathtaking landscapes, small picturesque bays and dream beaches can be found everywhere on the island.

A trip to the
Sassari Province

Sardinia Map North

To depict sardines in a single article would not do justice to the diversity of the second largest island in the Mediterranean . For this reason we dedicate ourselves at this point in detail to the north of the popular holiday destination. The north, by which the province Sassari is usually meant, extends from Alghero and Stintino in the west along the coast over the Costa Paradiso to the northernmost town of Santa Teresa di Gallura with a view of Corsica to the famous Costa Smeralda and the port city of Olbia in the East.

The term Caribbean of the Mediterranean is often used in connection with Sardinia. The island owes this title to the crystal clear water in the turquoise bays with the light, white sand. You just have to drive along the coastal road, every few kilometers one beach follows the other – and each has its own charm. So it can be worthwhile to go to a different beach every day.

Costa Smeralda

But the north has a lot more to offer than just beautiful beaches. The landscape is rocky and green at the same time. And in their small towns you can go on a journey back in time. For example, the municipality of Castelsardo , with a population of 5,000, is one of the island’s top attractions. Castelsardo is located on a headland in the Gulf of Asinara , on top of which the castle of the ruling family Doria from the 12th century is enthroned. The place with its colorful houses, inviting cafes and small alleys is surrounded by national parks and archaeological excavation sites and is definitely worth a day trip.

The port city of Alghero in the northwest is no less historically influenced, but somewhat larger. Surrounded by a city wall, the city with its Catalan-Gothic buildings invites you to its colorful old town, in whose alleys, by the way, motorized traffic is not allowed.

The squares in Santa Teresa Gallura are particularly colorful in the evenings. In the northernmost city of Sardinia one is well prepared for tourists. Here you will find numerous restaurants and bars, but also many small boutiques.

If you leave Santa Teresa Gallura south in the direction of Palau along the coastal road, you can already have a look at the La Maddalena archipelago after a few minutes’ drive. Those who do not visit these islands have really missed something. There are also recommendable holiday apartments and holiday homes near the archipelago and the best surfing spots in Northern Sardinia are also located here.

South of the port city of Palau, from where the boats also cross to La Maddalena, the famous Costa Smeralda begins. It goes without saying that the name comes from the emerald-colored water. The coastal section is mainly known as one of the most exclusive holiday areas in the Mediterranean. In the nightlife or in the noble boutiques of Porto Cervo , it can happen that you meet a VIP who stops off the coast with his yacht.

Regardless of the celebrities, we would like to take this opportunity to dispel the cliché that Sardinia is an exceptionally expensive holiday destination. There is a suitable offer for almost every budget. The island is multifaceted in all areas. Whether sunbathers or active vacationers, La Sardegna has something to offer everyone.
